Gretagrund special conservation area

Gretagrund special conservation area, located in the sea area south and south-east of Ruhnu is formed to protect the Gretagrund bank (Shoal or Shallow); its surface area is 14,650.4 ha. It is a part of the Europe-wide Natura 2000 special protection area network (Gretagrund Site of Community Importance).

The special conservation area was formed in 2010 for the protection of underwater sand banks and reefs as habitats and the habitats of certain migratory birds. The following birds’ habitats are protected: black-throated loon, little gull, red-throated loon, long-tailed duck, velvet scoter and razorbill.
